~ A Cut Above ~

Mark Hurley, who took our ASA106 DELMARVA circumnavigation cruise in July 2023, sent the following comments.

~

I first found The Maryland School after completing my 103 elsewhere and wanting to evaluate other options. I found the Captain Tursi videos on YouTube and then introduced myself to him at your booth in the spring sailing show I visited in Annapolis. I knew I would be back.  I chose the school ultimately because of the thoughtfulness & attention to detail. I want my friends and family to feel and be as safe as I can make it for them each and every minute they are on a boat with me. I also tend to over think things and process them, create check lists and study before undertaking an adventure. And your school not only reiterates important techniques, but you also suggest new techniques we may not be aware of.

The Maryland School Training Plan (spiral) was very helpful in reviewing techniques, very detailed in how to carry out duties. I loved that I did the 104 with same school. The techniques didn't change, but I felt I was practicing what I had already learned. And while I may have forgotten something it was reminded to me reviewing the book before attending in person.  I also re-watched a lot of the videos by Captain Tursi offered on YouTube to reiterate in my mind the techniques. This also helped refresh in an attempt to not leave anything out.

Captain Gifford -- truly a gentle captain who softly suggests when you need to course correct and advises clearly. I also find it useful to quietly watch him advising others -- the way he approaches solutions is truly helpful in my own learning and understanding. When you teach, there is a balance of advising and correcting to where the student doesn't feel inadequate. And he somehow achieves that.

Captain Bauer -- this is my first interaction with Robin. I felt she was a pleasure to work with and learn from. She introduced ideas that complimented David's style as well.

I really enjoyed working with both instructors. They were knowledgeable, fun, witty and put up with the very hot days with at least a half smile. :)
