Gary has been sailing the Chesapeake Bay since 1985.
He holds a USCG 50 GT Masters Captains license and is certified as
an ASA Instructor thru 104 and Docking.
He obtained his Senior Navigator Designation from the U S Power
Squadron and has taught their Seamanship, Sail, and Engine Maintenance
courses. As life long resident of Maryland, Gary has owned and operated an
automotive repair shop, served as a volunteer fireman and paramedic for
more than 30 years, and currently provides east coast yacht delivery and
boat maintenance services where he especially enjoys taking new sailors
and boat owners out on their new vessel to learn and enjoy. Gary and his
wife, Deb, live in Glen Arm and cruise aboard REALITY, their
Passport 40 out of Baltimore Yacht Club.
Their daughter, Kate, is an attorney in Washington, DC and comes up
to Baltimore as often as possible. Future plans include some coastal
cruising and probably ending up in the Caribbean.
"I just wanted to send you a note to let you know how much I enjoyed
the recent 101 class with Captain Gary Hutson. He adapted his
teaching style to each individual in the class and made the topics
interesting. As testament to his abilities as an instructor, I scored
100% on the written and skills tests. By nature I am very analytical and
curious about how and why things work, and Gary took the time to explain
those aspects of sailing. He’s extremely personable as well. Beyond the
mechanics of sailing, the 4 days were actually a lot of fun! The 101
course at MD School was an enjoyable experience and I can’t wait to
advance my sailing skills. I just hope I’ll be lucky enough to have an
instructor as good as Captain Gary."
